Victoria’s Secret model Gigi Hadid has revealed she has Hashimoto’s disease, and says the medication used to treat the thyroid condition has attributed to her recent weight loss.
The 21-year-old says she has been taking medication for the disease for two years, and her “metabolism actually changed like crazy this year”.
“For the VS show I didn't want to lose any more weight,” she told Elle, revealing she just hoped to “have muscles in the right place” and a “perkier” derriere.
Indeed the blonde beauty hit the Victoria’s Secret runway in Paris last week, showing off her very slender frame in a selection of daring lingerie.
She also dared to bare at a Reebok event in New York City this week, displaying her best boxing moves while wearing a crop top and black leggings.
According to the American Thyroid Association, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis “is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies directed against the thyroid gland lead to chronic inflammation”.
Middle-aged women are most commonly affected by the condition, but it can also affectt men and children.
Meanwhile Gigi’s mother Yolanda has been open about her battle with Lyme disease.
Caused by a bite from a vector, the infection has also affected Gigi’s younger sister Bella and brother Anwar.
Gigi’s appearance has been in the spotlight recently for different reasons.
Just last month the girlfriend of Zayn Malik broke her silence after being made to wear a poncho in Tommy Hilfiger’s 2015 runway show because she wasn’t as “thin” as the other girls.
According to Tommy Hilfiger, the casting director for the show said: “She doesn't really fit because you know she's not quite as tall as the other girls, she's not quite as thin. So they put a red, white and blue poncho on her”.
Needles to say, Gigi’s army of fans were outraged over the model being fat-shamed.
In an interview with Access Hollywood, Gigi spoke about the debacle.
“It's funny because it's something that people think I wasn't aware of," she says.
"Possibly back in the day that would have gone through my mind but I know that when Tommy said it, it was in context of a larger story that wasn't in the video."
She added: “The point of the story was that Tommy was rooting for me and that above all, regardless of what the stylist of that season said or what he put me in, Tommy wanted me in the show and Tommy was pushing for me and Tommy loved my curves.
“The next season, I wore a bikini on the same runway with the same stylist of the show that previously put me in a poncho.”
