How playing criminal Carl Williams changed Gyton Grantley's life


A decade ago, fresh-faced actor Gyton Grantley played the role of his career – Carl Williams in Underbelly.

Now, the 37-year-old has opened up about playing the notorious murderer and how it gave him his biggest highs and lows to date.

“My life got turned upside down overnight. I was famous all of a sudden,” Gyton told News.com.au in an interview to celebrate the anniversary of the series.

“I had paparazzi outside my front door for a few months and everywhere you look there was just eyes.”

While winning Logies and gaining positive recognition for the role was something to be proud of, the downside was just as overwhelming.

At one stage, the actor suffered a two year drought where he simply couldn’t get work.

Basically the feedback was that I’d be doing fantastic auditions but the directors and producers said, ‘we can’t have Carl Williams playing that part.’”

Playing such a notorious figure had its ramifications, but at the time, Gyton was excited to play such a known criminal and still is.

While it took a while for the Australian public to see him as anything but Carl, the actor has had huge success with roles in House Husbands, The Dressmaker with Kate Winslet and most recently, shooting for the telemovie, The Blake Mysteries.
