Harry Potter fans are the best partners, according to science

It’s time to throw away that sorting hat, because you my fantasy-loving friend are the pick of the bunch, according to science.

Yes, for all the times we were mocked for crying about Dobby, or screaming at Snape, there was a reason for it all and that was to turn us into the best kind of person to be in a relationship with.

According to a new study published in the journal Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts, those who have spent hours pouring over the Harry Potter books are considered to have more positive, realistic, mature and romantic beliefs about relationships.

That’s right, we always knew true love would win out in the end. Always.

And it doesn’t just go for Harry Potter readers. Those who like the fantasy and sci-fi genre in general are the least likely to support unrealistic beliefs in relationships – go figure!

Participants – that had been exposed to different classic, fantasy, romance, science fiction, horror and suspense writers – were asked to respond to various unhelpful and unrealistic beliefs on relationships and mark them on a 6-point scale for how much they agreed.

Some of the ideals asked about were: Disagreement is destructive; mind reading is expected; romantic partners cannot change; the sexes are different; and the expectation of sexual perfection.

Researchers pointed out that at least two of those – the belief that disagreement is destructive, and the belief that partners cannot change — are “associated with maladaptive relationship attitudes, behaviours, and/or outcomes in the real world”.

So if you’re one of those people in a magical relationship with a sci-fi-loving partner then appreciate it for everything it’s worth.
