Health expert claims 'coconut oil is poison'

Coconut oil reached it’s peak popularity in 2015 when it was considered the trendy superfood that was guilt-free and rich in health benefits.

However, according to health expert, Dr Karin Michels, the ‘superfood’ oil is actually “one of the worst foods you can eat”.

“Coconut oil is pure poison,” she stated during her lecture on ‘Coconut Oil and other Nutritional Errors’ at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health last month.

Contrary to popular belief that it is one of the most healthy oils out there, Karin has urged that this certainly isn’t the case and rather recommends people to avoid it.

The lecture comes after the American Heart Association (AHA) amended their dietary guidelines for coconut oil after recognising the high level of saturated fatty acids it contains, identifiable in the way it remains solid at room temperature.

Karin explains that these saturated fatty acids also have the potential to clog one’s coronary arteries, so it’s no surprise health professionals aren’t a fan.

When it comes to cooking, experts recommend olive or rapeseed oil as alternatives given they contain more unsaturated fatty acids.

However, if coconut oil is something you would struggle to give up completly, the best step you can take is to moderate how often you indulge and lower your portions.

In regards to other foods like acai and matcha that have also earned the prestigious title of ‘superfood’, Karin nothing bad to say yet simply suggested that their claimed nutrients are most often ‘sufficiently supplied’ in more accessible foods like carrots, cherries, and apricots.
