Two young parents have started a fundraiser campaign for their baby boy who was born without a nose.

Eli Thompson was born to parents Brandi McGlathery and Troy Thompson in Alabama on March 4. As soon as the umbilical chord was cut, doctors noticed something was not right with the child.

Lacking external nose tissue, Eli was also born without a nasal cavity or an olfactory system. His condition, called congenital arhinia, reportedly only affects one in 197 million.

“I had never expected anything to be wrong with him, every ultrasound came back normal,” mother McGlathery wrote on their fundraiser page.”My doctor told me it was a 1 in 10 billion chance of this happening.”

At birth, Eli immediately began breathing through his mouth, with his mother saying the lack of nasal cavity “didn’t phase him at all.”

After examination by an ear nose and throat specialist it was concluded that, without nasal passages or sinus cavities, plastic surgery is not an option. According to Eli’s parents, he will eventually have to have a trachaeonomy and a feeding bag inserted into his stomach.

For now, the new family are awaiting results from tests and scans to see what the next step for Eli is. “This was a hard blow to handle…but we are still hopeful,” McGlathery said. “He has a long road ahead of him and we need all the support we can get.”
