Hollywood producers face backlash for Thailand cave rescue movie proposal
It’s the news story that has captured the world, and just hours before all 12 boys and their soccer coach were rescued from a flooded Thai cave on Tuesday, Hollywood producers were already plotting a big screen adaptation of the disaster.
US film company Pure Flix has since faced a wave of backlash, with people claiming the move was ‘selfish and insensitive’ as lives were at stake.
“@PureFlix Seriously? You turn up in Thailand before everyone is safe to start ‘negotiations’ for a movie about the Cave Rescue? There is a time and a place for things like this to happen. Doing it now is in very bad taste!!” one Twitter user wrote hours ahead of the completed rescue.
“Hey @PureFlix what part of family faith values involves sucking as much money as your greedy hands can out of the #ThaiCaveRescue before all of the boys and coach are safe and recovering?” another wrote.
Michael Scott, managing partner of Pure Flix films, and his co-producer Adam Smith had been scoping out the Tham Luang cave site and conducting preliminary interviews, reports AAP.
When asked if their move was insensitive given rescue operations were still underway, the filmmakers said it was simply a wise business move.

“There’s going to be other production companies coming in so we have to act pretty quickly,” Smith told AAP.
On Tuesday it was confirmed that all 12 boys and their soccer coach, who were trapped for more than two weeks deep inside a flooded Thai cave, had been rescued.
“The 12 Wild Boars and coach have emerged from the cave and they are safe,” the Thai navy SEAL unit said on its official Facebook page.
