The easiest ways to get a flight upgrade

If, like us, you’ve never been gifted with a coveted flight upgrade in your life, then listen up, because apparently there’s easy steps you can take to nab one.

According to Skyscanner, there’s simple things you can do when you get to the airport to make it slightly more likely that you’ll be upgraded from economy to business.

The first one is to act the part and dress like you belong in business class with the rest of the high rollers.

Then, for those who are on top of their upgrades, the flight price comparison website recommends actually reading the promotional emails you get from the airline, as sometime they have nifty deals.

If you’re a frequent flyer, then it makes sense that you join a frequent flyer programme.

Naturally if you’re angling for an upgrade and someone who’s a member of the airline’s frequent flyer programme rocks up, they’re obviously going to give it straight to them.

Also on the list of upgrade tips are turning up early to the airport so you’re the first one to ask for an upgrade, being extra smiley and nice to staff and traveling alone.

Skyscanners tips come after travel expert and elite flyer Gilbert Ott claimed there is only one way to get upgraded and no, it doesn't include begging the attendant at the check-in desk.

Ott claims taking a chance on oversold flights may be your only chance at nabbing a first class or business class seat but of course, there's still no guarantee.

"Despite the (urban myth) advice, opting for oversold flights is really the only practical tip to get an upgrade," he told Metro.

"One thing that’s consistent with oversold flights is that someone will need to be bumped, and when someone is bumped, they are owed compensation, an upgrade or both.

"That compensation can make a paid trip into a free flight, or provide a future free flight, and assuming there’s room up front on the next flight, it’s not at all uncommon to get the upgrade as a “thanks for being flexible".

He said that he was most successful in getting an upgrade during peak travel times when the planes were busiest and more so on Monday through to Thursday, when businessmen fill-up seats.
