Inside Meghan Markle's laid-back first wedding
Millions of people from across the globe will be tuning in to watch Prince Harry say ‘I do’ on May 19, but it won’t be the first time his bride Meghan Markle walks down the aisle.
Far from the grand halls of Windsor Castle and the ornate altar of St George’s Chapel, when the 36-year-old former actress tied the knot to ex-husband Trevor Engelson, she did so in the most relaxed and easy-going way possible; barefoot on the beach.
Meghan and the Hollywood executive, who met while they were both in university, said married in a romantic ceremony in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, back in 2011 – the same year Prince Harry served as best man at his brother Prince William’s wedding.
The event was held on the sand, under the stars, with over 100 friends and family members in attendance. Chairs and tables, draped in white tablecloths, were set up on the beach within an open-topped marquee surrounded by white lanterns.
To the side, there was a large black platform serving as a dance floor so guests didn’t have to shimmy on the sand.
A relaxed Meghan wore a simple, strapless white gown, which was cinched in at the waist with a glittering diamanté belt, while her groom was dressed in a white shirt and trousers.
Photos taken earlier in the day portray just as laid-back a scene, with Meghan appearing to play beer pong while dressed in a yellow polka dot bikini and a hat.
Guests, who were also wearing swimmers and shorts, whittled away the day with other games on the beach such as wheelbarrow racing.
Meghan’s beloved mother Doria, was also there for the occasion.
While the day looked stunning, Meghan and Trevor’s marriage didn’t last long, and just two years after they became man and wife, the pair had gone their separate ways, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ on their divorce papers.
Rumours have been swirling that Meghan’s career might have been to blame, with her role on Suits taking her to Toronto.
Trevor, now 41, remained in LA while his new wife commuted between the couple’s home in the States and her filming schedule in Canada.
In one particularly brutal account of their separation, author Andrew Morton – who penned Princess Diana’s secret biography – says that Meghan sent her wedding ring back by post.
“He [Trevor] went from cherishing Meghan to, as one friend observed, ‘Feeling like he was a piece of something stuck to the bottom of her shoe’,” Andrew wrote.
“A wealthy entrepreneur friend claimed the marriage ended so abruptly that Meghan sent Trevor her diamond wedding and engagement rings back by registered mail.”
