Inside Meghan's wedding carriage - and why it's less fancy than Kate's

Kensington Palace have revealed photos of the carriage that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen for their wedding procession through Windsor Town after they say ‘I do’ on May 19th.

The couple have decided to ride in the Ascot Landau carriage, which is one of five Ascot Landaus in the Royal Mews, and a carriage that the Queen has ridden in many times before.

While it’s a very fine carriage with plenty of royal history behind it, there’s no denying that it’s no where near as regal as the one Kate Middleton and Prince William rode in back in 2011.

For their wedding, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were granted a 1902 State Landau, which is finished with gold and red paint and red furnishing.

The carriage is very extravagant, and has carried many royal bride’s in the past – including William and Harry’s mother Princess Diana.

But it’s likely Harry and Meghan have chosen a small carriage in order to easier manoeuvre around the narrow streets on Windsor.

To prepare for all circumstances, Harry and Meghan will have two carriages on hand: one with a roof down in case of dry weather, and one with a covered top in case of rain.

The carriages will be led by two Windsor Grey horses named Storm and Tyrone, who are father and son.

Windsor Grey horses have been the chosen breed for The Royal Family for years and have drawn the carriages of Monarchs and Members of The Royal Family since Queen Victoria.

In the past, Ascot Landaus carriages were used for The Queen’s procession up the course at the Royal Ascot Race.

They’ve also been selected for many other official royal visits, including The Queen’s coronation visit to Edinburgh, the Investiture of The Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle, The Queen’s Silver Jubilee visits to Glasgow and Cardiff, and on State Visits.

In addition, the carriages played a role in the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011, carrying Prince Harry, Pippa Middleton and the bridesmaids and page boys from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace.

So Harry is pretty familiar with them…
