Jacinda Ardern's awkward encounter with Donald Trump

She made history by bringing her adorable baby daughter Neve into the United Nations General Assembly meeting on Monday.

But while everyone was swooning over Jacinda’s ultimate working mum moment, the New Zealand Prime Minstar was cringing after having an awkward run-in with Donald Trump at the event.

The 38-year-old, who became the second elected leader in history to have a baby while in office, appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and explained the whole thing.

When questioned about how Jacinda felt about steel and aluminum tariffs placed on New Zealand by US President Trump, Jacinda revealed that she had a chance to talk to Donald about it the United Nations General Assembly Week.

“Well, there was a slight distraction. My partner knocked over a flag pole,” Jacinda said, referring to her partner, radio broadcaster, Clarke Gayford.

While Jacinda said it happened right at the end of her chat with Trump, it did disrupt things because Clarke was ‘scrambling to fix the situation’.

When she turned around, Clark was holding what she described as a ‘metal prong’.

“I’m surprised no one leapt on him at that point, because it looked like a weapon,” she said.

Jacinda also touched on the highly-publicised laughter that erupted during Trump’s UN speech during the week.

“Are you trying to create a diplomatic incident here,” she laughed when she was asked about it.

She said the president said ‘I didn’t expect that response’ when people began to laugh which prompted the audience of dignitaries to ‘laugh with him’.

She said she didn’t join in but she ‘observed’.

She may have had her mind on other things, as she brought her adorable three-month-old baby girl Neve into the room with her.

Jacinda was pictured cuddling up to her baby before she spoke at the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit.
