Love-struck penguin dies next to cardboard girlfriend

He stole hearts around the world when he bizarrely fell in love with a cardboard cut-out placed in his enclosure, and Japanese penguin Grape-kun has passed away at the ripe old age of 21.

Grape-kun’s adorable fascination with a female cut-out of a Kemono Friends anime character went viral in April, after she was placed in his pen for an ad campaign.

Tobu zoo officials revealed the Humboldt penguin then became smitten with the girl – named Hululu - after his real-life penguin wife Midori dumped him.

Determined not to let heartbreak happen again, Grape-kun would stare at Hululu for hours, with staffers at the Tokyo zoo forced to remove her so he would eat.

Grape-kun – who would have been 80 in human years – passed away following a brief illness, with the penguin trending on Twitter as his fans posted tributes.

"Little Grape had a wife called Midori but she left him and found herself a new husband," Tobu zoo's penguin caretaker Eri Nemoto told local media.

"We put the cardboard panel next to him to comfort him to the very end."
