Jonathan Rhys Meyers Apologises for 'Minor Relapse'

Jonathan Rhys Meyers - who has publicly struggled with his sobriety for the last 10 years - wrote a message to his fans shortly after he was photographed drinking straight out of a vodka bottle on the streets of London.

"Mara and I are thankful for your support and kindness during this time. I apologise for having a minor relapse and hope that people don't think too badly of me," Meyers, via his fiancé Mara Lane's Instagram account, began.

"I stopped drinking immediately and it is no reflection on Damascus Cover as I was not meant to attend Cannes this year and I apologise to fans and colleagues."

Reports claimed that Meyers missed promotional duties for his film, Damascus Cover, which screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

"I am on the mend and thank well wishers and sorry for my disheveled appearance as I was on my way home from a friends and had not changed I feel I made a mistake and feel quite embarrassed but this was just a blip in my recovery otherwise I'm living a healthy life," he concluded, referencing the series of photos where a disoriented looking Meyers was snapped drinking vodka from the bottle.

"Love and blessings. #Rebel #Angel."

But it seems Lane is standing by her man during this difficult time. They uploaded the above photo together on Tuesday, writing, "Wishing you a lovely day and rest of week. With Love, J&M."

Overall, his fans seem very supportive.

"Stay strong Jonathan. Sending you and mara so much love, strong, and respect. Hugs and love from Paraguay. :)" one user wrote.

Another added, "Johnny you don't have to apologise, it's your life. We believe (sic) in you, I admire you and respect , send you encouragement and strength to overcome this bump. I wish the best for you and Mara."

Only a couple of users shared more negative sentiments like this one: "Jonathan been a fan off yours since the beginning! Put the bottle down and throw yourself into your work (what your good at) haven't seen you in anything worth watching since Dracula and at this point Actions speak louder than words 'you have an addiction' and Sidenote it would be nice if you would use your verified Twitter & create your own Instagram account Vs using your girlfriends... It gives a more personal touch for you to connect to your fans! ' The ones that have stuck by you all these years!"

The actor was hospitalised in 2011 after relapsing and has been in and out of rehab since 2005. He has also been arrested and detained several times for drunken brawls and has been involved in three airport altercations.

In 2013, The Hollywood Reporter alleged NBC even withheld part of his salary for Dracula - which was estimated to be $100,000 per episode - until filming was completed to ensure Meyers would show up for work.

According to the report, JRM had a meltdown while shooting the show and production had to stop while he briefly returned to London for hospitalisation. A sober companion then accompanied him to set to finish shooting the 10 episodes, and after it was completed, he returned to rehab. Dracula was not picked up for a second season.

Damascus Cover will be Meyers's first starring role since Dracula.
