Kate Middleton's $2500 gown compared to 'grandma's curtains'

Kate Middleton may have every designer at her fingertips but she’s not known for taking a risk when it comes to fashion.

However, on the first day of her royal tour to Sweden with her husband, Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge stunned in a long, gold, floral, $2,500 Erdem gown.

And while she may have stepped outside the box in the style stakes, Kate has been ridiculed for her bold choice online, with some ever comparing it to a pair of drapes.

“No, it looked like the Queen Mother's drapes and whoever styles her needs to be fired. Duchess did NOT deserve to be dressed like that,” one person said online.

“Nope sorry it’s not for me. I had similar when I was 7 in 1974! Grew tired of wearing long dresses resembling Grandma’s curtains. She normally looks so classy too; what a shame - I think the dress is hideous! Sorry!,” another person said.

Others agreed, with one person said that if it wasn’t for the ruffle on the bottom it might actually be a nice dress.

“Sadly, just not a great choice :(” the woman said.

Another Tweeter said that there was just too much going on with the gown and said the Duchess should have stuck to a simpler style.

“I think if the sleeves were gone, it'd be fire,” they said.

Another person slammed Erdem’s whole season collection, claiming it was a massive “flop”.

“What was she thinking?” they tweeted.

It’s been speculated that the dress might have been an ode to the Swedish colours of gold and blue, however most people online have just put it down to a bad fashion mishap.

The Duchess matched the controversial dress with a burgundy velvet Jimmy Choo clutch and a pair of drop pearl earrings.

She was joined at the dinner by Crown Princess Victoria, who looked stunning in a black one shoulder dress and Hollywood star Alicia Vikander in a blue number.
