Kensington Palace has been forced to respond after the Duchess of Cambridge received a huge amount of online backlash for her choice of ‘fur’ hat during her visit to Sweden.
The Duchess is known for wearing a furry hat or two, but one particular pom pom on top of a beanie sent the internet into a spin.
After William and Kate enjoyed a fun ice hockey match on their first day of their royal tour, royal watchers immediately tried to work out the details behind Kate’s outfit – which then generally goes on to sell out pretty quickly.
The beanie was quickly identified as one by New York designer Eugenia Kim, with the listing on the website even featuring a photo of Kate at the ice rink, and an added line in the product description: "Worn by Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton on the 2018 Royal Tour to Sweden."
But instead of them flying off the shelves, many were appalled to discover that the beanie she wore included 100 per cent arctic fox fur.
"This is a scandal. How can she wear that? They are killed, murdered for their fur,” one outraged Twitter user posted.
“Kate wearing fur hat - NO excuse for this. Outrageous and disgusting,” another added.
However, after all the uproar, Kensington Palace issued a statement saying that the pompom on Kate’s hat was not real fur, according to Daily Express royal reporter Richard Palmer.

In spite of the Twitter outcry, Kensington Palace says the Duchess was not wearing fur on her bobble hat earlier. I believe the gloves were fake fur too and the coat shearling.— Richard Palmer (@RoyalReporter) January 30, 2018
Kensington Palace has double checked and is adamant the hat is faux fur. It won’t confirm the make. Is this #fakefurnews?— Richard Palmer (@RoyalReporter) January 30, 2018
He then went on to share a link to what is now believed to be the correct hat.
Thank god, that’s been cleared up.
That’s the wrong one, Chloe. This is the right one. https://t.co/RFzTDunMTx— Richard Palmer (@RoyalReporter) January 31, 2018
I can't believe there is actual debate on whether Kate's hat is faux fur or not. Who cares. Actually I care, she should be allowed to wear real fur without being judged 🙅🏻— Dalia Esposito (@xoxodalia) January 30, 2018
