How design guru envisions Harry and Meghan's future baby nursery

Not only is Laurence Llewellyn Bowen considered design royalty in the UK, but the British ‘homestyle consultant’ has some impressive connections with the royal family itself, including Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

So how would the 53-year-old, who has most recently been judging the designs on Australia’s House Rules, feel if the royals asked for his design expertise at the palace?

With reports speculating newlyweds Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are planning to start a family, perhaps designing a new baby nursery could be a good place to start.

“I’m probably the worst person to ask,” Laurence laughs as he chats to Be ahead of the House Rules finale.

The British personality admits he has a unique take on décor for children’s spaces, acknowledging it wouldn’t cater to many people’s taste.

“My grandson has been living in a nursery that I’ve decorated with some very scary dragons,” the father of two says.

“I very much grew up in an un-childish nursery environment and as the girls did as well.”

According to Laurence, sophistication can be a great asset when designing a child’s room.

“I always think that actually you shouldn’t dumb down design just because a kid’s a kid,” he explains.

“Children have a very receptive eye and I love the idea of heritage.”

Heritage is certainly a factor that would come into play in the palace, and Laurence and his wife Jackie, who planned parties for Princess Diana in the past, are very well acquainted with the royals’ tastes.

A few years ago Laurence event went into business with Prince Charles with the purchase of a countryside barn the pair had hopes of converting.

However recent months have seen the interiors guru focus his energy on his second home, Australia, as a judge for renovation show, House Rules.

With the finale airing on Monday night, Laurence says it will be a close call between the two teams, Toad and Mandy and Mel and Dave, who have worked consistently hard in a bid to win the $350,000 prize money.

“I’m very proud of what they’ve all achieved, and it really shows they had understood that for design to work, [it] has to be about personality,” he says.

“The two that are now in the final, they have shown consistently that they are very much happy to bare their soul and show the world how they feel they can best express themselves through design.”

The House Rules finale airs on Monday at 7:30pm on Channel Seven.
