Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen says House Rules is ‘painfully honest’

In an exclusive interview with Be, the savvy, UK designer and new judge ofHouse Rules Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen reveals what to expect from this season of the show.

“This season of House Rules is terribly honest, painfully honest I think sometimes, but that’s what makes it so engrossing,” he says.

Laurence himself is definitely not holding back with his critiques, as we’ve already seen in his comments about the living room Fiona and Nicole recently delivered where he stated the room was, “Hobo not boho,” and styled with “stuff of such satanic hideousness”.

He claims this honesty has come from developing a close friendship with fellow judges Wendy Moore and Drew Heath.

“Because we are so friendly we don’t mind what we say to each other, we speak our mind because we feel entirely secure in terms of what we mean to each other.”

Not only are the judges stepping it up with their critiques, the contestants are also raising the bar, with Laurence warning viewers to “Expect the unexpected".

“The teams are striving to create much bigger, much louder, much more daring interiors within the context of the house rules,” he says.

He says that the contestants are particularly exploring the use of pattern and colour this season along with big ideas in general for their interiors.

Laurence’s main advice for the rest of the show is not to take any of the teams for granted; “The ones that are big at the moment could be very little in a couple of weeks' time”.
