Lena Dunham celebrates her body with naked selfie after hysterectomy

Girls actor and producer Lena Dunham has marked the nine-month anniversary of her hysterectomy by sharing nude images in celebration of what her body has gone through.

The 32-year-old has the major operation to stop the unbearable pain of endometriosis and decided to commemorate the event, which she admits has been a taxing area of self growth.

Posting the image to Instagram on ‘National Leathercraft Day, National Relaxation Day and National Lemon Merengue Pie Day’ she revealed she chose this date as it was the same amount of time she would have been pregnant for.

“I’ve never celebrated the 9 month anniversary of anything and I realised last night why that number feels so funny – I won’t ever do it the way I planned to,” Lena captioned the images.

“My body is mostly healed and every day I find a new bruise on my heart, but today I offer myself gratitude.”

She says she wanted to “offer herself gratitude” and explained how she “knew to choose herself”.

Sharing some insight behind the ‘RIP Judy’ tattoo displayed in the photos, Lena also explains the pseudonym for her uterus.

“Today I give thanks for Judy [her uterus], for her graceful exit and for this body, which is stronger than I’ve ever given it credit for,” she wrote.

In February, Lena decided to get a hysterectomy due to ongoing suffering from endometriosis. The decision to get surgery, which removes the uterus and cervix, was a tough one, the actor admitted.

The celebrity’s followers were supportive of her message, encouraging her to continue promoting self love and honesty.

“This is so beautiful. I’m giving thanks for you today. Congratulations to us all on the birth of your self love. Every day you express your self you give us a way to find our voice . You are a true artist. You are a gift,” one comment read.

“You’re a brave lady in so many ways. You’re inspirational to a generation that is often saturated with individuality, but yours in honest, raw and refreshing. You live your truth and that’s so much more than many do. Congratulations on your nine month anniversary,” another added.
