For Chinese Olympic swimmer Fu Yuanhui, getting her period couldn’t have come at a worse time, with the popular athlete openly revealing it was the reason she didn’t perform her best in the pool.
After the swimmer and her teammates placed fourth in the 4x100 metre medley relay, Fu Yuanhui was seen holding her stomach after the race.
When a Chinese interviewer asked if she was ok, the swimmer was completely honest about her performance.
“I didn’t swim well enough this time," she said. "It’s because my period came yesterday, so I felt particularly tired—but this isn’t a reason, I still didn’t swim well enough.”
Fu Yuanhui’s taboo-busting answer has struck a chord with sympathetic women all around the world, with fans tweeting their support of the star.
Looking forward to the day when talking about periods isn't such a BIG deal. Until then, way to go #FuYuanhui! pic.twitter.com/ZwtPpTBhEu
