This is the interview that made the Queen urge Diana and Charles to divorce

Over the years, there’s been a lot of speculation as to what finally prompted Princess Diana and Prince Charles to divorce.

Aside from the myriad of cheating claims comes this video from BBC1, which has just resurfaced in light of the 19th anniversary of Diana’s death.

Conducted by Martin Bashir, the interview is telling of Diana’s disdain for the Royal family at that point. When Bashir asks if she thinks she’ll ever be queen, she’s quick to reveal why she’d never be allowed.

“I don’t think the establishment I married into would want that to happen,” she says. “They’ve decided that I’m a non-starter. I do things differently. I don’t go by a rule book. I lead from the heart, not the head.”

Instead, she says, she’d like to be queen of people’s hearts.

“I don’t think I have as many supporters in that environment as I did,” she says carefully, referring to the royal household. “They see me as a threat of some kind. But I’m here to do good. I’m not a destructive person.”

When asked why Diana thinks the royal family perceive her as a threat, she pulls out this gem:

“Every strong woman in history has had to walk down a similar path and I think it's the strength that causes the confusion and the fear. Why is she strong? Where is she going to use it?”

A month after this interview went to air, Queen Elizabeth wrote to Princess Diana and Prince Charles to urge them to divorce.

"After considering the present situation, the Queen wrote to both the Prince and Princess earlier this week and gave them her view, supported by the Duke of Edinburgh, that an early divorce is desirable,” said a statement issued by Kensington Palace at the time. “The Prince of Wales also takes this view and has made this known to the Princess of Wales since the letter.

"The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will continue to do all they can to help and support the Prince and Princess of Wales, and most particularly their children, in this difficult period."

While Princess Diana may not have won the royal family’s heart, she certainly won the people’s – and to her, that’s all that would have mattered.
