The new iPhone 7 is losing its headphone jack and people are freaking out

It's official folks, Apple has done away with the headphone jack.

Instead, if you want to listen to music or FaceTime on the bus without the world listening in, then you'll need to buy a set of specific wireless headphones called AirPods, which are worth $159 or a pair of new Lightning-based headphones.

Apple unveiled the new iPhone 7 design at a special event yesterday and while the new design promises to "dramatically improve aspects of the iPhone experience", people are not impressed with the wireless buds, which connect to your phone instantly when you put them in your ears.

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced at the event that the AirPods can sense when they're in your ears and when you take them out they will pause your music.

Perhaps one of the most baffling aspect of the design is that not only does you iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch need to be charged, but now your AirPods need to be plugged in and charged too.

The Airpods only deliver a five-hour battery life and after that you'll need to pop them in their charging case while you're on the go.

15 minutes in the case will give you three hours of listening time and to check the battery life, you'll need to hold the AirPods next to your iPhone or ask Siri “How’s the battery on my AirPods?”.

The downside to the elimination of the headphone jack is pretty obvious and may be detrimental when people are deciding whether or not to update to the latest model.

Nearly everyone these days has headphones and speakers based on the 3.5 mm headphone jack and they could essentially become redundant if they invest in the iPhone 7, unless a specific Lightening-adapter is created, which let's face it is the last thing anyone wants to buy.

And while Apple may see the shift as an act of courage, it remains to be seen whether or not it will be a stroke of genius or a technology fail for them.

Along with the AirPods, Apple's new iPhone 7 claims to be splash and water resistant, features a dual camera, is brighter, two times faster than the iPhone 6 and promises to have the longest battery life of any of its devices.

The iPhone 7 comes out on September 16th and the AirPods will be available to purchase from late October.
