Tim Robards: "You doubt yourself so much on 'The Bachelor', people critique everything"

This week is the season finale of The Bachelor, so who better to talk all things love with than the original rose-giver himself, Tim Robards.

Back in 2013, he was just a Sydney chiropractor looking for love. Countless dates and rose ceremonies later, and Tim found what he was looking for with lawyer Anna Heinrich.

But Tim admits he had absolutely no idea what was on the cards when he first signed up for the show.

“I knew it was going to bring some change, but whether that was I’d meet a nice girl, whether it would open up doors, whether it would just be an exciting adventure. I didn’t know what it was,” he tells me.

Being the first Bachelor exposed Tim to a whole lot of scrutiny he didn’t expect.

“You doubt yourself so much. Your first kiss, you’ve got to break up with girls, people are critiquing everything you say, everything you do,” he says. I always cared a lot about what people thought, but I had to go, you know what, I have to be happy with myself.”

With Richie Strahan in Tim’s shoes this week and set to make his final decision, Tim’s advice is simple to all those out there looking for The One.

“You’ve got to love yourself wholly before anyone else will. If you can, then you’re more attractive to people as well,” he says. “If you’re needy for love and you’re totally reliant on having someone there, you can set yourself up for what becomes baggage for your next relationship.”

But what about life after the Bachelor? Tim’s had the last four months off work after a serious surgery to reattach the tendon back to his arm. Yikes!

“You’re always trying to push the limits with training. I’m not an athlete, but I think in my head I’m an athlete," he laughs. "It’s that balance of trying to challenge your body and grow stronger, but every now and then you take it that little bit too far.”

Now it’s back to work full-time as a chiro, as well as his real passion, his training system The Robards Method.

“I’m trying to simplify health and fitness. Trying to combine body weighted training in a system like karate,” he says. “Every month there’s a little exam, so you’re always achieving and growing.”
