A woman ripped off her cornea after leaving her contact lenses in for too long

If you’re one of the 50 per cent of Australians who are four-eyed, you’ll definitely sympathise with 23-year old Meabh McHugh-Hill, who recently ripped off one of her corneas after leaving her contact lenses in for too long.

If the thought of that doesn’t make you want to vomit, the next part certainly will: according to The Mirror UK, she only left them in for 10 hours – which most contact lens wearers do over the course of an average work day.

Basically this news means that contact lens users are at risk, on any given day, of looking like this:

According to the Liverpool native, the incident could have been prevented – but the only thing she was guilty of was being in a rush.

"I ran upstairs to take them out and stupidly, in a rush, I just pinched my eye first like I normally would do to get the contact out," McHugh-Hill explained. "But I should have moistened them first because this time my eye was so dry the contact had actually glued itself to my eyeball."

McHugh-Hill said that as a result, she suffered through a week of unbearable pain.

"It was excruciating, like nothing I've ever experienced before,” she said.

"My vision is okay now but my eye is still very sensitive. I was so, so lucky. I could have lost my sight. I just didn't realise how dangerous wearing contact lenses could be if your eyes are not moistened."

The damage to her eye is so severe that she’s no longer a candidate for laser eye surgery – and she can never wear contact lenses again.

So let this be a lesson to you all – stop wearing your lenses for more than six hours a day (the recommended maximum time per day) or risk looking like an extra from The Walking Dead.
