This leather-wrapped rock costs $121

Buying Christmas presents for your loved ones can be a challenge, and quite often you end up getting something you don’t really need.

We have all done that stressful, last-minute present-buying spree...

Case in point – this $121 (US$85) rock that US department store Nordstrom is selling.

Unless the recipient is a geologist, we can’t imagine them being particularly thrilled with this gift.

It is certainly a step up from the pet rocks we had as kids. I mean, it does come in a leather pouch…

But it is still just a rock.

Try as they might to sell this – and they do – you could probably just find one of these in a garden somewhere.

Listed under ‘ Medium Leather Wrapped Stone’ on the website the blurb reads:

A paperweight? A conversation piece? A work of art? It’s up to you, but this smooth Los Angeles-area stone - wrapped in rich, vegetable-tanned American leather secured by sturdy contrast whipstitching - is sure to draw attention wherever it rests.

If the price tag is too much for you, there is good news. There is a smaller version on sale for just $87 (US$65).

Clearly the rest of the Internet is as confused as us:

Interestingly, the item has some positive reviews on the Nordtrom site - but we aren’t sure we can take them all that seriously.

“I've lived in Los Angeles for ever a decade and I can tell you this is a big deal ... A rock from Los Angeles is truly a gift, but to be wrapped in leather just takes it to the next level,” reads one.

“I get the simplicity of it but haven't figured out the functionality yet. I have attached it to the right hand side of my belt as an embellishment, and have had lots of compliments. It does seem to give me a bias to starboard and I haven't figured that out yet,” writes another.

And one of our favourites: “I was thinking about buying a pet rock, but with the winter months here I was worried that it would make my new pet cold. Not a problem anymore. This pet rock comes with its own little leather sleeping bag.”
