And now all the OTT kids names have been collected in one place after a user posted the question on forum Quora: “Any names you have found over the years that were funny, interesting, or just awful that you would not name your child?”

Not surprisingly, a whole range of hilarious, outrageous and downright embarrassing monikers have come to light.

For those parents trying to make sure their child stands out from the rest, make sure they don’t stand out for all the wrong reasons.

“I think the worst I've seen recently is a couple who ‘loved the name Kaitlyn but wanted something different’”, wrote one user. “They named the poor child KVIIIlyn (VIII is the Roman numeral for 8, for those unaware).”

Another good tip: if you like a name, make sure you fully understand the meaning of it before you commit your child to a lifetime of utter humiliation.

“My mother in law is involved in our state’s 'Girl’s State' conference, sort of a 'future leaders' thing for high school girls [and] she noticed one girl used a first initial only- C. Rose Smith,” reveals another user. “My MIL asked her about it... The girl got very embarrassed, and said it was because her mother gave her a first name she thought 'looked pretty', but didn’t know the meaning of. The poor child’s name was actually Chlamydia.”

According to other Quora users, if you are going to go wild and wacky with your child’s name, make sure they have a more conventional nickname to fall back on.

“I once had a friend who was going to name a baby Sephiroth, after a Final Fantasy character,” says one Quora user. “I wasn’t a fan until he pointed out to me that the kid has so many options for ‘normal’ names (Roth/Ross, Seph/Seth) or he can decide to embrace having a totally ‘weird’ name.”

Also be aware that what you think might be a beautiful name, might get slightly lost in translation with other languages.

“In Cantonese, chow see means stinky shit. It’s a well-known fact in the Cantonese community that you do not name your child Chelsea,” reveals one commenter. “Sorry to break this news to all the Chelsea’s already out there.”

And finally, sometimes it’s just a no - a very hard no - when it comes to some names.

“I once knew a young new mother who wanted so badly to name her son a name she has always loved: Satan… She just loved the way the name sounded,” adds another user “Eventually enough people were very serious about NOT doing that and her husband very reasonably disliked the name enough, that she eventually reluctantly settled on…. Statan (Stay-ton).”
