Single mum banned after dressing for dad-daughter dance
Like any dedicated mum, Amy Peterson doesn’t want her six-year-old daughter Gracie to miss out on anything in life.
So when it came time for a father-daughter dance at Gracie’s Locust Grove Elementary school, the single mum hatched a plan.

She bought extra large, baggy clothes and took to her chin with mascara to dress up so she could spend the night dancing with her daughter.
“I watched tutorials on how to do beards, so I got the beard down pat. I went out and did the best I could, putting together an outfit. I even had cologne on,” Amy told TV channel WSB-TV.
Admitting she thought the school probably wouldn’t let her attend if she showed up in normal clothes, Amy had even filled out a form a month earlier indicating they were coming.
But an hour before the dance, the principal called to put an end to Amy and Gracie’s night out.
"She said, 'No, I forbid you to come and if you show up we will turn you away,'" Amy explains.
Gracie was understandably devastated, screaming in frustration and tearfully asking her mum, “Why does this happen to me? Why do I have to be the only one with no dad?”
Despite the school issuing a refund for their dance tickets, that’s not enough for Amy.
She’s determined to prove to her daughter that “it’s ok that you don’t have a father figure in your life, because your momma is both” by going to lawmakers to make this kind of discrimination illegal.
“This is my baby, and I’m not going to watch her go through this [even] if I have to fight tooth and nail to make sure this doesn’t happen to another child,” she explains.
