Is Uber's 20% tip default for taxis charging you more?

Use the Uber App to book cabs? People are questioning whether we are paying a secret and very confusing 20% gratuity fee or not.

Users are finding that there is a default 20% tip added to every taxi trip you take with Uber.

The thing is, you can't access this info via the App on your phone. You have to sign into your Uber account on the website!

Here are the steps you need to see if you're paying the extra 20%:

- Head uber.com
- Go to 'Rider sign in'
- Go to payment
- Scroll down and find the Gratuity for TAXI section
- Check what percentage the app has set for tips

A lot of users have the tip option set to 20%. The only question is; are they only charging this when you are in countries like the United States? Or are they doing in Australia too?

In January this year, Reddit member WigglePen started the Uber 20% default tip thread explaining that his poor elderly mum was paying this extra fee without knowing.

"She had a default 20% tip added to every trip! I reset it to 0% as she pays the tip in cash to the driver when she feels they have done a good job," he wrote.

"She had no idea she was being charged this! I downloaded the app onto my phone to see if it is in the setup which it is not. I went to account settings and can see nothing about tips. Do they put this in later? Check you account!"

Eight people in the uber office signed in on their computers and six had their tip option set to 20% and two staff members had theirs set to zero per cent.

This does not see to be the case for Uber Black, SUV, or UberX.
