Wills: ‘I would have loved to have met Catherine’

No one in the world can forget the heartbreaking sight of Prince William, aged 15, walking in his mum Princess Diana’s funeral procession after her tragic death nearly 20 years ago.

Now, the royal has spoken candidly about his mother’s passing, revealing it’s taken him nearly two decades to get over her death.

“I am in a better place about it than I have been for a long time, where I can talk about her more openly, talk about her more honestly, and I can remember her better, and publicly talk about her better,” he told British GQ.

“It has taken me almost twenty years to get to that stage. I still find it difficult now because at the time it was so raw.”

For William, who now has a family of his own with Kate Middleton and children George, three, and two-year-old Charlotte, it’s been devastating to know his mother won’t be a part of their lives.

“I would like to have had her advice,” he told the publication.

“I would love her to have met Catherine and to have seen the children grow up. It makes me sad that she won’t, that they will never know her.”

With the world knowing exactly how tumultuous his own upbringing was with Charles and Diana separating in 1992 before their divorce four years later amongst speculation of affairs, being a good dad is William’s first priority.

In the interview which Prince William did as part of the Heads Together mental health campaign and will be published later this week, the 34-year-old who married university sweetheart Kate in 2011, explains stability is the biggest thing in his life right now.

“I want to bring up my children in a happy, stable, secure world and that is so important to both of us as parents,” he said.

“I want George to grow up in a real, living environment, I don’t want him growing up behind palace walls, he has to be out there. The media make it harder but I will fight for them to have a normal life.”
