Royal frontrunners: The baby names for William and Kate’s third child
They have a Prince George and a Princess Charlotte, but just hours after announcing her third pregnancy, Princess Kate has everyone wondering what the third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be called.
And bets are on that the royal couple will be keeping things classic as they did with George and Charlotte.
So far the names William and Kate have chosen for their children have honoured family members.
Four-year-old Prince George was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s father King George VI and Charlotte’s middle names Elizabeth and Diana honour her great-grandmother and late grandmother.
Now, at the top of the list for a baby girl’s name is Alice; and for a baby boy, Arthur.
Queen Victoria had a daughter named Alice, and it was also the name of the Duke of Edinburgh’s mother making it a popular choice that also keeps tradition in the family.
The moniker Arthur is in the family already, as a middle name for both Prince Charles and Prince William.
In keeping with tradition, using the name Victoria - after the long-reigning monarch- may also be a top choice for the new royal baby if it's a girl.
Alexandra and Mary, the Queen’s middle names, are also likely choices
In terms of boys’ names, the candidates are Philip (after the Duke of Edinburgh) and James - historically a royal name, but the Duchess’ brother is also called James.
Both Prince George and Princess Charlotte also have two middle names each so there are plenty of name spots to go around!
