How microblading changed my face forever

Beauty experts always say that eyebrows are the most important feature on your face.

I couldn't agree more and that's why, when Benefit declared October 2nd National Brow Day, I jumped fully on board.

Let's face it, our bushy bristles have come a long way in recent years.

Just look at make-up queen Kylie Jenner, who at just 20, has already had an eyebrow makeover and is never now seen without her trademark ombré arches.

Though I never thought I’d see the day when I could compare myself to Kylie, we share this in common, having both undergone brow transformations recently.

But while she uses a pretty savvy technique of drawing, brushing and blending to perfect her brows, I had to take a much more drastic approach.

You see, I’d fallen victim to the 90’s trend of thin for the win.

I remember very clearly, aged 14, the hours I spent plucking my ‘monobrow’ in front of my bathroom mirror with my mum’s tweezers.

The look I was going for was Mariah Carey glam, as my teenage-self worshipped everything about her.

When I emerged, I had perfectly oval eyebrows that were now a good inch away from the top of my nose. HOT. (Not.)

As we all know very well, the over-plucked look died a long time ago. But while I grew out of the phase, unfortunately my eyebrows didn’t.

That’s right, THEY DIDN’T GROW BACK.

No matter what product I used or how often I had them shaped, they stayed exactly the same. Friends told me to get them tattooed, but I’d seen so many disasters I decided to steer clear.

So my eyebrow pencil became my BFF.

It was far from ideal. I remember going on first dates and sealing the evening with a cheeky kiss, only to pull away and see the dark smudges from my brow on their forehead. Talk about awkies.

Then aged 30, I heard about a new tattooing technique called microblading, which involved using fine strokes to create individual 'strands of hair', instead of the blocky ‘Scouse brow’ look that had previously been the result of getting inked.

But there was a catch. It was bloody expensive.

Sadly it was too late to go back in time and warn my younger-self, so the $1200’s seemed totally worth it.

I did my research though and found a microblading expert in Sydney, Kristin Fisher Eyebrows, who agreed to take my unfortunate case on.

Most gals just want to thicken out their existing brow line, but I needed major remodelling.

I’m not going to lie, the two-hour process was pretty painful. I took a few snaps for my Insta account (don’t judge me) and couldn’t believe how much blood there was.

But after, I was thrilled with the outcome.

Looking in the mirror, I had ‘hair’ where it had previously been bald and Val from Kristin Fisher had given me that much longed for shape.

The real result though was in my confidence, which felt as high as my new arches.

Friend’s commented on how much it changed the appearance of my whole face, which tbh, left me feeling super face positive. That’s a thing btw.

So when I heard about National Brow Day, I knew I’d be taking the time to celebrate my facial fuzz.

As my gal Kylie says in her tutorial, “brows are everything” and I couldn't agree more.

I may not be naturally blessed with deliciously bushy brows, but at least now I have the natural look.

From now on, tweezing should be left purely to professionals.
