Bizarre Crown Jewels secrets from Buckingham Palace

She may be head of the royal family since she had her coronation in 1953 but it turns out the Queen doesn’t know all the secrets from inside Buckingham Palace.

A new programme about the Queen’s coronation shows the Monarch being let in on what happened to the Crown Jewels during WWII – and it’s the first time she’s ever heard about it.

According to a report in The Times, host and royal expert Alastair Bruce claims King George VI put some of the most –prized possessions from the crown jewels in a biscuit tin.

The reason behind the King’s bizarre hiding of the precious items was apparently so the Nazis wouldn’t get their hands on them.

After the jewels were fitted into the tin, they are then reported to have been buried in a hole deep within the palace.

The newspaper also alleges that the trapdoor used to access the jewels is actually still there today.

“He just gouged them out, recognizing there would be plenty of chances to put them back in again, wrapped them up and put them in the Bath Oliver tin so should anything happen – just as when Oliver Cromwell ordered the Crown Jewels to be smashed up – they could ferry these away and could rebuild it in due course,” Bruce told The Times.

The Queen, who would have been a princess at the time, was just 14-years-old when the biscuit tin was placed underneath the castle.

It comes after a BBC programme detailing the Queen’s coronation is due to air.

In the footage, the Queen can be seen flippantly playing with the coronation crown as she chats about the day she became Queen.
