Why this 'scientific' bee-attack torture scene is being mocked

Redditors think they’ve found the worst torture scene in movie history, and they may actually be onto something.

A video from Nicolas Cage’s widely panned 2006 movie The Wicker Man showing a dramatised bee attack was circulated on the forum this week, where it was mercilessly mocked.

The scene sees Cage held down while a helmet cage is placed on his head and filled with bees, at which point he screams the most iconic line of the film; “Oh no, not the bees! Not the bees!”

While designed as a remake of the 1973 horror film with the same name, the movie proved to be a massive critical and financial disaster, with people saying its awful script and acting made it unintentionally hilarious.

The forum even went so far as to jokingly claim that scientists had praised the ridiculous scene for its accuracy, saying researchers had sent the cast and crew letters of congratulation.

“I'm not a horror movie fan at all, but even so, that looked REALLY terrible,” one person on Reddit said, ”Laughably so, except that it was horrible. Seriously, WTF??!!!”

Another explained, “It's an awful movie. Nick goes to an island to look for a lost girl. He's allergic to bees. He finds a bee cult. They bee him.”

“No lie. It’s unbeelievable.”

There's a girl dressed as a bee behind him. And this is a horror film, not a comedy.

While it was no box office smash, The Wicker Man quickly became a cult favourite, and the infamous bee scene has been turned into countless memes.
