Snapchat password leak hits thousands of users

Thousands of Snapchat users’ password information has been leaked online after a hacking breach.

The password fiasco has hit over 50,000 Snapchat customers, with their information allegedly published by hackers on another freely available site.

According to The Verge, who first reported the news, the cyber-attack was masterminded in the Dominican Republic.

The hackers managed to gain all the information by sending thousands of Snapchat users a link that lead to a Snapchat login page.

That information was then reportedly stored and released by the hackers on a public page.

Snapchat called the cyber-attack a ‘phishing’ in a statement about the incident and told their users to use stronger passwords.

"We are very sorry when anyone is tricked by phishing,” the company said, according to The Express.

"While we can't prevent people from sharing their SnapChat credentials with third parties, we do have advanced defences to detect and prevent suspicious activity.

"We encourage Snapchatters to always use strong passwords, enable login Verification, and never use third-party apps or plugins.”
