Mel Greig: The art of being spontaneous

Why is it that whenever you plan something, it never goes the way you want it to? And the unforgettable moments that do happen are from completely spontaneous situations?

I was so ridiculously keen for my friend Courtney’s birthday last weekend.

I’d made sure I had a few quiet weekends at home leading into it because I had planned to make the most of this special weekend. I even booked myself a hotel room and removed hair from my body in anticipation that one might have company in said hotel room.

The celebrations started with a late lunch, then leading into the party into the evening. We even had a scheduled slot to do a costume change before hitting the bars. But for me, the night was about to end with me watching Will & Grace re-runs in my hotel by 8pm ALONE.

You see, I had been up at 3.30am that morning for work and didn’t have a nap. Complete exhaustion kicked in and I couldn’t continue.

What a freaking nanna #pathetic. Poor old lady didn’t get a nap, so she had to take her fabulously tanned and hair-free body back to the hotel alone. All of my grand plans ruined, and my hotel room WASTED.

I felt so bad that I had left the party early. Courts works in the industry though, so she understood and suggested we do brekkie in the morning if she was half alive.

The next day we touched base and said ‘Let’s just do brekkie at my hotel and see what happens from there’. Three hours later we were drinking free Moet by a rooftop pool… lemme fill you in.

Our morning started with a spontaneous rooftop breakfast by the hotel pool, weather was on point and we dressed up for the occasion to allow for a rooftop photo shoot to show how classy and fabulous we were. We were having so much fun we decided to set up camp and sunbake for the morning.

An hour into our sunbaking a group of guys came onto the rooftop… and then we all then got naked and had a massive orgy (kidding).

These guys were dressed up in slacks and shirts and were carrying bottles of Moet. JACKPOT. Then more guys came out and this time with cameras, it appears we were in the hot spot for photo shoots. They were about to go to a wedding and weren’t allowed to get drunk prior, so the Moet was offered to us, it would have been rude to say no really, so we took it off their hands.

So, we hung out with them for an hour of spontaneous fun with free Moet and hilarious banter. What had started as an unplanned morning had turned into something awesome and something you could not have planned for.

Does this mean you just set a location and let the spontaneous fun come to you? Imagine if you just stopped putting effort into planning the perfect night and just ‘let things happen?’

The only downside to this is that you might end up doing the hokey pokey with hairy legs, sheets covered in fake tan, right next to a full laundry basket of dirty clothes and a messy bathroom #notsexy.
