Beginning what would be a long and supportive relationship, Prince Henrik was by Mary’s side when she announced her engagement to Prince Frederik in October 2003.

Just days before their 2004 wedding, the Aussie shared a sweet moment with her future father-in-law at a Danish reception to celebrate the nuptials.

It was all smiles on the day when Princess Mary was officially welcomed into the Danish royal family when she wed Prince Frederik on May 14, 2004.

Later that year, the family celebrated Prince Henrik’s milestone 70th birthday along with Queen Margrethe, Prince Joachim, Princess Alexandra, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix.

It was a case of Prince Henrik and the heir, when the Danish family stepped out with Mary and Fred’s son Christian at Marselisborg Castle in 2006.

The royals aren’t known for their public displays of affection, but Mary and Prince Henrik happily posed arm-in-arm when they attended King Carl Gustaf of Sweden’s 60th birthday in 2006.

With King Carl Gustaf's birthday celebrations continuing, so did Princess Mary and her father-in-law's willingness to show how close their relationship was.

Talk about proud as punch! Doting Prince Henrik happily looked on at his grandchildren Christian, two, and Isabella, one, during their dad Frederik’s 40th birthday celebrations in 2008.

Proving they're partial to a family trip just like everyone else, Princess Mary and Prince Fred accompanied Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik during their 2009 state visit to Vietnam.

Hands on grandad Henrik was seen giving Isabella a cuddle as the family celebrated Queen Margrethe’s 70th birthday in 2010.

And then there were two more… The arrival of twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent in 2011 saw the family become closer than ever.

Happy to play the patriarch of the family, summer holidays were a busy affair for Prince Henrik, with his family coming together at the royal summer residence of Grasten Castle in 2012.

Having spent more than their fair share of time at royal events, Prince Henrik was seen toasting his daughter-in-law at a State Banquet at Fredensborg Palace in 2016.

The Danish royal family were all smiles as they posed for their annual summer photo in 2016.

Holding hands with his family as they celebrated Queen Margrethe’s 77th birthday, this would be one of the last times the family would be officially photographed together before Prince Henrik’s health took a turn for the worse.

Prince Henrik sadly passed away at the age of 83, with reports he suffered from dementia and had been treated for a benign tumour in his lung. His family were seen paying their respects last year.
