Chrissie Swan's management company bid $53000 for paparazzi photos showing the popular media personality smoking a cigarette while pregnant with her third child

The company, called Watercooler, was outbid at the last minute by weekly magazine 'Woman's Day', who paid a reported $55,000 for the pics.

It was initially reported that Swan and her manager David Wilson were willing to pay $10,000 for the controversial photos after Ian 'Dicko' Dickson, a part-owner of Watercooler, quoted that figure on his breakfast radio show.

It turns out that Swan was desperate enough to pay more than five times that price, with reports claiming she was outbid at $53,000, to stop the photos going public.

Swan made a tearful admission on her radio programme on Wednesday morning, describing her struggle to quit smoking since finding out she was pregnant.

"I just couldn't do it," she said, adding that she felt racked with guilt. "It was a deeply shameful secret" she said.

Her clandestine habit was especially embarrassing, she said on The Project last night, "because being a mother is the single most amazing thing that has ever happened to me".

Woman's Day editor Fiona Connolly defended her magazine's purchase of the the photos, saying Swan has now said she is pleased the photos were taken as it brings to light the seriousness of smoking during pregnancy.

"Woman's Day will publish the photos of Chrissie Swan that are currently dividing the nation," Connolly said in a statement.

"Chrissie herself has admitted how grateful she is the photos were taken as they not only stopped her smoking but have sparked one of the most significant debates for women's health in years."

While it has undoubtedly been a tough week for Swan and her family, many people have voiced support for her public confession.

Fiona Sharkie from QUIT told television news media that instead of public ridicule Swan needs support right now.

Smoking while pregnant can cause a range of problems including premature labour, low birth weight, and respiratory problems in babies.
