Forget diet pills, superfoods and weight loss aids, a new brand of 'no calorie' noodles can reportedly help dieters shed excess kilos, according to a growing army of health-conscious dieters.

After launching in the UK last year, Zero Noodles have taken the country by storm, with retailers struggling to keep up with the demand.

The fat-free, gluten-free, and sugar-free noodles have been labelled as an ‘alternative to pasta for weight loss’. A single 200g serving of Zero Noodles - enough to replace a small portion of rice, pasta or conventional egg noodles on your plate – contains just eight calories.

Dieters say the noodles have helped them lose weight while keeping hunger pangs at bay, while the manufacturers claim they can even help reduce cholesterol, cutting the risk of heart disease and stroke.

But while the low-calorie noodles have been growing in popularity since their launch, the Japanese have enjoyed these noodles for generations, knowing them as skirataki, or ‘white waterfall’ noodles.

The weight loss wonder-food are made mostly from water and glucomannan flour which has been touted in various scientific journals as helping to lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Nutritional therapist Laura Lamont says that while the noodles could help with weight loss, these noodles should be enjoyed as part of a calorie-controlled diet.

"They are a bulking food, so you feel full, but they are low-calorie," she said. "The consistency on first try can be surprising because it’s not a texture you’re used to, but after one or two goes people like them. They are not slimy; they have more of an al dente texture."

Three healthy noodle options
  • Zucchini noodles: low in fat and gluten-free, these noodles are made simply by putting raw zucchini through a vegetable spiraliser. They’re great steamed, are high in vitamin C and are easy to digest.
  • Buckwheat noodles: these noodles made from buckwheat grain, which makes them high in protein, gluten-free and low in carbs.
  • 'Brown rice noodles" these noodles are made from brown rice, instead of wheat which some people have trouble digesting. They’re low in calories, full of B vitamins and are low-GI, keeping you feeling full, for longer.
