Researchers looked at how content 27,000 participants were over the course of 12 years.

The findings showed that Australians have a 'life satisfaction' rate of about 8.5 at the age of 15, which decreases as they enter their late-teens and early-twenties.

Happiness levels continue to drop through people’s thirties, before reaching an average low of 7.5 in the mid-forties.

Life satisfaction increases again as we age with happiness ratings rising to about 8.5 in the early-eighties.

Having children is believed to increase a person’s happiness before the child is born and then decrease it afterwards.

And for young people, leaving home was found to create a temporary spike in happiness.

Meanwhile, retirement was another big factor on people’s life satisfaction, with most Australians seeing a rise once they leave their job.

Unsurprisingly, researchers also found that the end of a relationship and the death of a spouse were common factors for a significant decrease in people’s happiness.

Overall, Australians have a happiness ranking of about seven out of 10.
