Is Botox the newest weight-loss trend?

It’s responsible for smooth foreheads and expressionless actresses everywhere, but Botox is handier than you think.

Not only used to help with migraines, muscle spasms and those who struggle with super sweaty pits, new research suggests Botox injections in the stomach can help people lose weight.

A group of Norwegian scientists – who injected Botox into 20 obese people - found the injections could block the vagus nerve connecting the brain and stomach, helping to control feelings of hunger.

After one year and two injections, 70 percent of the patients had lost weight, losing on average 17 percent of their extra body weight. After 18 months and three injections, 75 percent of patients had shed an average of 28 percent of their excess body weight.

But before you go rushing out to book a Botox appointment, experts say further research is needed and to be aware of the dangers.

"Botox injections are not 100 percent safe in this location," plastic surgeon Matthew Schulman tells Shape, explaining it’s not a simple procedure, and can lead to serious side effects.

So while Botox can help keep those pesky fine lines at bay, it might be a while yet before it's helping kilos magically disappear too.
