Is belly shaming the new body shaming?

Too big, too small, too rounded, too much of a six-pack. For some women it’s heartbreaking to excitedly share their beautiful baby bumps on social media, only to have strangers slam how they’re looking and what’s wrong with their shape.

Endurace athlete and coach Brittany Aäe knows this all too well – and she’s had enough.

Brittany hit back after she was blasted for her “small” belly at 39 weeks, posting a side-by-side picture of her and plus-size model Tess Holliday at the same stage in their pregnancies.

“That is the gorgeous @tessholliday looking boss on the left and me with the defined abs on the right,” Brittany captioned the pic. “She is a voluptuous model and I am a sinewy mountain athlete. Both of us are shamed for our size - she for her roundness and me for my smallness.”

“Why does our society shame women whose bodies do not adhere to some narrow notion of false normalcy? Let's instead keep our thoughts and words about other people's size to ourselves. Pregnancy is tough enough without also being body shamed.”

Brittany's the latest in a line of angry mums speaking out to stop the bellyshaming.

Aussie fitness trainer Chontel Duncan shared a snap of her and friend Nat – with both of them due four weeks apart – to show how completely different women’s bodies are.

“Each woman carries different and this most certainly doesn't mean one is doing something wrong or not healthy,” wrote Chontel. “We both have healthy growing babies & we both have had incredible pregnancies so far, feeling amazing & full of energy.”
