Now new research has revealed the one thing you should be scoffing to shut those cravings down – the humble smoothie.

But not just any smoothie. It’s a case of the thicker the better according to the study conducted by the Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

With some participants drinking a thin 500 calorie smoothie and others a thick 100 calorie one, the study found thickness mattered more than calorie content when it came to feeling full.

Why?

It’s pretty simple. Something called “phantom fullness” means the thicker the drink, the more it gives you the sensation of filling up your stomach and the longer you’ll be able to keep those hunger pangs at bay.

According to nutritionist Zoe Bingley-Pullin there's some simple ingredients that can help you thicken up your smoothie. "Try chia seeds, avocado and nut butters," says Zoe. "Fruit and vegetable pulp left-over from juicing, oat or wheat bran, psyllium and rolled oats are also good."

That’s bad news for Diet Coke lovers who hope a can of the fizzy stuff will help keep them going.

“These results underscore the lack of the satiating efficiency of empty calories in quickly ingested drinks such as sodas,” said researchers.
