Study says alcohol can cause seven different types of cancer

We all know alcohol should be consumed in moderation, but a disturbing new study highlights exactly how detrimental your next wine could be.

The disturbing find was made by an epidemiologist from Otago University in New Zealand, who says there’s enough evidence to correlate the incidence of cancer with how much alcohol one consumes.

To reach the conclusion, Connor analysed a number of reviews of scientific studies conducted over the past decade the likes of the World Cancer research Fund.

"There is strong evidence to suggest that alcohol causes cancer at seven sites in the body and probably others," Professor Jennie Connor told The Guardian.

"Even without complete knowledge of biological mechanisms [of how alcohol causes cancer], the epidemiological evidence can support the judgement that alcohol causes cancer of the oropharynx, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon, rectum, and breast."

If you’re shrugging your shoulders at this because you only drink a wine or two a day, you should probably listen up: Connor also says it’s not just heavy drinkers that are at risk.

"The highest risks are associated with the heaviest drinking but a considerable burden is experienced by drinkers with low to moderate consumption, due to the distribution of drinking in the population.”
