New study says ordering takeaway can save you calories (yes, really)

Even if you’re the most disciplined dieter, a cheat meal every now and then is inevitable.

But rather than going out in a blaze of KFC and Krispy Kreme glory, new research has revealed there is a way to eat and enjoy yourself. And it all’s about ordering your food in advance.

Research from Carnegie Mellon University found the earlier you put in an order for your food, the more likely you are to choose healthy options. Those who ordered late? One-way trip to calorie city.

One experiment of the study looked at people ordering lunch and found that each hour that passed in the lead-up to midday saw an additional 38 calories being added to the meal chosen. So those who ordered at 7am saved 190 calories over those who made their choice close to lunch.

Researchers say that when we make a decision about something that’s about to happen right away, we only think about the immediate consequences.

“We care about what’s happening right now – like how tasty it is – but discount the long-term costs of an unhealthy meal,” says lead researcher Eric M. VanEpps.

But if we have time to think about what we’re doing, you’re more likely to think your decision through.

“You’re more evenly weighing the short-term and the long-term costs and benefits,” adds Eric. “You still care about the taste but you’re more able to exert self control.”

Lesson to take away from this: leave as much time as you can to order your next takeaway!
