Pete Evans' latest controversial health advice is to steer clear of dairy

He’s been in hot water over recommending a Paleo diet for babies and saying sunscreen was dangerous, and TV chef Pete Evans has caused controversy again after telling a woman with osteoporosis to cut dairy out of her diet.

In advice that goes against the conventional medical recommendations that dairy protects against osteoporosis, the My Kitchen Rules star claims “calcium from dairy can remove the calcium from your bones”.

Pete was posed the question during a Q&A session on his Facebook page, and admits he hasn’t given his daughters Indii, seven and Chilli, 11, dairy for over five years.

Critics were quick to hit Twitter to slam the celebrity chef.

Endocrinologist and medical director of Osteoporosis Australia Professor Peter Ebeling claims the chef “shouldn’t be saying these things. It’s really bad and just not true.”

“The keystone to preventing osteoporosis is adequate calcium intake and this is achieved by three (daily) serves of calcium-rich foods like dairy,” Professor Ebeling told The Herald Sun. “Dairy is the most easily available source and has the highest calcium content in it."

“[Pete]has a high media profile and he does have a responsibility but you can’t assume what he says is scientifically correct."

“Osteoporosis Australia is happy to work with him and make him an ambassador to give the correct message.”
