Kardashian-inspired weight loss tips you shouldn't try

There's no denying that the Kardashian's are rocking some seriously hot bodies at the moment.

Kim has shed nearly 30kg in pregnancy weight, Kourtney managed to lose 15kg after giving birth to her third child and Khloe's snapchat and Instagram is filled with her journey as she maintains her 20kg weight loss.

Despite some of their techniques coming under fire, like promoting products for payment without disclosing the nature of the product in the post, there's no denying that fans are eager to see whether some of their techniques actually work.

Cosmopolitan.com asked American-based weight-loss specialist Charlie Seltzer, M.D., to weigh in on which ways are worthwhile, and which are ones to avoid.

1. Exercising in a sauna suit.

A technique favoured by Khloe, who claims wearing what is essentially a garbage bag, helps her sweat two-three times as much. The reality star has previously written on her app: "I like wearing the sauna suit during cardio, but you burn more calories and break a sweat faster even if you're lifting weights." She also said to combat dehydration she drinks two-three times as much.

However while this technique can help with weight loss, Dr. Seltzer says it only provides temporary results.

"The likelihood of overheating and dehydration is huge, and death is the worst-case scenario. And if you make up for all the water you're losing by drinking more, your stomach will feel sloshy and full, which can impact quality of your workout," he told Comospolitian.com.

"Because your body burns more calories at rest after intense workouts, anything that detracts from that intensity is ultimately a disservice — even if it makes you weigh less immediately afterward. It doesn't make sense."

2. Avoid mold-containing foods and cutting out dairy products.

Khloe's nutritionist apparently sees avoiding mold-containing foods as "the perfect strategy for fat loss and muscular repair", while the third Kardashian sister also cut out dairy from her diet, however the expert said there's no proof eating foods containing mold will make your weight loss journey any harder.

"I can't make sense of how this could affect weight loss, besides the fact that mold-containing foods like blue cheese may have more calories than harder cheeses," Dr. Seltzer said. "I'd still recommend eating moderately and exercising over cutting out mold, in particular."

As for cutting out dairy? "Low-fat dairy is high-protein source of nutrition, and eliminating an entire food group is absolutely not necessary to lose weight or maintainable for most people."

3. Give up gluten.

Kourtney has put herself and three children all on gluten-free diets, recently bringing gluten-free cookies for the kids to eat at their uncle's birthday party instead of birthday cake. However cutting it out of your diet is only really necessary if you have a reaction to it.

"Eliminating a food group until you reach your goal weight won't help you address any underlying issues like overeating, so you'll just put the weight back on once you reintroduce the food," Dr. Seltzer said but added that those who have a sensitivity to gluten feel bloated making it difficult to eat well, exercise, and lose weight efficiently.

4. Wear a waist trainer.

Pretty much all the Kardashians have been seen wearing waist trainers at one point, including younger half-sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner who also seem to swear by the technique, but according to Harvard-trained cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, Daniel Maman, MD, it is absolutely pointlesss.

"External compression via a waist trainer has absolutely zero permanent effect on fat distribution, intra-abdominal organ positioning, or body contouring," he told Cosmopolitan.com.

5. Cutting out carbs.

After giving birth to second child Saint, Kim followed the Atkins 40 Diet to help her lose the baby weight, which basically involved cutting out all carbs like sugar, sweets, white flour, and white rice, and then gradually reintroducing selective foods like brown rice and sweet potato.

"Slowly reintroducing food you've eliminated after a very, very restrictive induction period should work on paper. But take bread away from someone who's been eating it for 30 years, and the first thing they're going to eat when they're off the diet is three loaves," Dr. Seltzer said.

"If you have to do crazy shit to be lean, you're not going to be happy, and you lose."

And what is the verdict on all of this from a medical professional's view point?

"People would do better to figure out what will work for them through trial and error rather than copy what someone else does," Dr. Seltzer said.

"Particularly, it seems, when that someone is a Kardashian — or anyone who lacks a medical degree."
