Research from the University of Miami, Florida, has found there’s a wonder food that’s just as effective as coffee – and it’s none other than the humble apple.

The study saw runners randomly assigned to having an apple, black coffee, energy drink or nothing thirty minutes before undergoing a series of tests based on reaction times and endurance.

The researchers found those who ate something before they trained had significantly increased endurance than those who didn’t, with those chomping on an apple appearing to have the same endurance as those who had caffeine.

This ties into previous studies which has examined the flavonol quercetin found in apples, and how this can help endurance by making more oxygen available to your lungs.

There you have it: an apple a day might just keep those weary workout woes away.
