It’s something people never seem to get enough of with only 25 percent of us snoozing eight hours a night, but are you seriously sleep deprived?

A simple spoon test developed by University of Chicago researcher Nathaniel Kleitman might be able to tell you exactly how tired you are.

You will need a spoon and a metal tray and all you need to do is lie down in a dark room in the early afternoon, holding the spoon over the edge of the bed and over the metal tray.

Check the time before you close your eyes, and the idea is your hand will release the spoon when you drift off, crashing onto the tray and waking you up.

You’ll then be able to see exactly how long it took you to fall asleep.

For those who fell asleep within five minutes, researchers claim you are severely sleep deprived.

If it took you 10 minutes to nod off, you might be struggling with your sleep patterns.

Anything past the 15 minute mark though, and you’re nailing the sleep brief and getting enough snooze time to keep you healthy and rested.

Once you know how sleep deprived you are, it's a matter of looking at your lifestyle and whether you need to be giving up your nightly Netflix binge in exchange for some serious shut-eye.
