How online shopping is making you fat


Is there any greater hell than Sunday afternoon grocery shopping? The chaos, the crying kids, the queues and the self-checkout machine that JUST WON’T WORK.

No wonder then that more Aussies are turning to getting their weekly shop delivered. But it’s got experts warning online shopping could be bad for your health - and your waistline.

“We’ve gone from hunter-gatherer to grocery carrier to simply signing the delivery note,” Professor Kevin Fenton from Public Health England told the Telegraph.

“It’s the daily routine that’s key. Carrying the groceries home, taking the stairs, walking to the next bus stop before getting on.

Anything we all can do to use our muscles more and raise our heart rate regularly will help prevent musculoskeletal problems and improve our overall health.”

Statistics reveal that 3.8 percent of Aussie women – compared to 1.8 percent of men – do their grocery shopping online.

And if you’ve got kids under the age of 16, you’re also much more likely to favour ordering food via your computer.

That’s no good for a lot of us, especially people who sit behind a desk all day. Scientists say those who spend eight hours sitting a day are 60 percent more likely to die prematurely than active individuals.

With one hour all it takes to offset the sitting, experts say something as simple as hitting the shops is more important than ever.

“Everyone can become more active by making little changes to the things we do every day,” says UK Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies. “If you can go for a run about the part – great. But if you are pushed for time, something is always better than nothing.”
