Selena Gomez opens up on her battle with depression

She’s the bubbly popstar we usually see smashing out club bangers, looking flawless on the red carpet and taking photos with fans, but Selena Gomez has revealed all about her battle with depression.

The 24-year-old, who shot to fame on Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place, spent 90 days in rehab for anxiety and depression last year and claims it was one of the best things she’s ever done.

In a candid interview with Vogue, the Good For You singer opened up about the pressure of touring and how the loneliness of being on the road got too much for her.

“My self-esteem was shot. I was depressed, anxious. I started to have panic attacks right before getting onstage, or right after leaving the stage,” Selena said.

“Basically I felt I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t capable.”

Gomez checked into a rehabilitation centre in Nashville, where she was put with a group of six women to take part in therapy sessions.

“You have no idea how incredible it felt to just be with six girls,” she said.

“Real people who couldn’t give two sh**s about who I was, who were fighting for their lives.

“It was one of the hardest things I’ve done, but it was the best thing I’ve done.”

Last August, Gomez axed the 34 remaining dates of her tour to seek help for “mental health issues”.

“Selena is dealing with lupus, but this break is to focus on her mental health,” a source claimed at the time.

Confirming her break, Selena told People magazine, “As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus… I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.

“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off… I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best.”

It wasn’t the first time Selena had seeked professional help as in 2014 it was reported the star checked into rehab in Arizona, with a source claiming she was “exhausted” and “broken-hearted”.

Gomez is now believed to be dating Bella Hadid’s ex-boyfriend The Weeknd with the pair thought to be smitten.
