Pete Evans slams 'three meals a day'

Paleo guru Pete Evans has come out swinging against multinational food companies for, he says, pushing their own agenda and encouraging people to eat three times a day.

The concept of eating breakfast, lunch and dinner was "created to help the multinational food industry stay in business by keeping the population craving carbs and not being able to maintain a healthy weight or to stay healthy," Pete told the Daily Telegraph.

While the My Kitchen Rules judge previously advocated eating up to eight meals a day to keep the metabolism moving, he now believes intermitten fasting is better for the digestive system, and for weight loss.

“Once you are fat adapted, you stop the hunger cravings for food, as you are supplying the body its key nutrients in the most natural way, which in turn makes this way of eating cheaper and quicker,” he said.

Sydney dietititian Susie Burrell believes Pete is slightly off base with his claims, arguing there is no one-size-fits-all model for eating.

"Every person is different and as such different styles of eating will suit different people. Some people will prefer/ need to eat 5 small meals each day while others will find they can control their weight more effectively with a fasting approach," she told Be.

"When it comes to general recommendations such as eating three times a day, this is based on evidence that shows eating regularly, and more calories in the first half of the day helps to control appetite and prevent overeating later in the day.

"It is a guide to help people structure their food intake, maintain consistency and manage their energy and appetite. To claim that we should or should not be doing something is simplistic when diet and human beings are complicated and there is not a one sized fits all model."
