Woman humiliated by CrossFit trainer opens own gym after losing 20kg

When Nerida Bint was told by a trainer that CrossFit ‘wasn’t for her’ she decided to prove him wrong.

After living overseas for three years, the 35-year-old from Newcastle, NSW, found herself 20kg overweight, severely depressed and in an unhappy relationship.

Deciding she needed to do something about it, she mustered up the courage to visit a CrossFit gym across the road from her house.

“I felt so horrible for two years and then finally snapped,” Nerida tells Be. “I was 26 I should be enjoying my life rather than being so self-conscious.

“I was already training at a local gym but it wasn’t until I bought a house across the road from a CrossFit gym that I realised there was a different way to train.

But before even trialling a session, the trainer looked her up and down and said ‘oh darling, this is not for you’.

“It was humiliating. It was one of those moments in my life I will never forget. The blood rushed to my face and it was all I could do not to cry,” she says.

“I hated my job, I hated my relationship, I was depressed and was carrying an extra 20kg, so to have that on top of that when I’d finally decided to do something it was a big blow.”

Nerida explains that she’d always been fit and lean most of her life until she moved to London and her lifestyle completely changed.

“I went from being really involved in sport and surf lifesaving, to drinking every night of the week, eating pasta, carbs, and takeaway. And I didn’t exercise at all," she says.

“I tried to go for a run one morning and got a chest infection.”

After returning to Australia she knew she had to do something, but this set back saw her gain another 5kg before finally it was a friend that convinced her to try his CrossFit gym.

“I was totally deflated and went into a spiral,” she tells us.

“But that one day changed my life. I remember when I got there I could see people training and I almost drove off. But it was the most incredible experience.”

She then set her mind to it and on her trainer’s advice did CrossFit five to six times a week and signed up to the Michelle Bridges 12-week Body Transformation.

She became completely obsessed and lost 21kg in that 12 weeks. Less than a year later, Nerida had a Certificate IV in Health and Fitness and became a CrossFit trainer.

Now she’s poured what she’s learnt into opening her own CrossFit gym targeted specifically to women called Lissome.

“What happened with that trainer the first time is what has made me so passionate as a gym owner. Everyone should feel like they belong,” she says.
